Dr. Barbara Hooks
Clinical Psychologist
Licensed in California (PSY28749)
& New York (027001)
Dr. Hooks provides individual psychotherapy to adolescent and adult clients looking to reduce suffering of various kinds. She specializes in treating anxiety, depression, addiction, life transitions, relationship stress, pregnancy and postpartum issues, and gender identity concerns.
Her approach utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness and compassion practices, and tailored interventions and treatment protocols from other evidence-based modalities (CBT, PE, ERP). She considers the therapeutic relationship to be the foundation all the work rests upon and, to this end, strives to create a calm, compassionate space characterized by empathy and deep respect. The therapeutic space enables clients to get in touch with what matters most to them and allows these values to act as a kind of increasingly well-calibrated compass for navigating life’s complexities.
A pragmatist in many ways, she offers specific strategies and tools to help you change your relationship to difficult thoughts and feelings and works collaboratively with you to identify what next steps feel most aligned. In addition to providing individual psychotherapy, Dr. Hooks conducts psychological assessments with individuals 8 years and older to answer a wide range of referral questions. She enjoys contextualizing a client’s personal history with data gleaned through the assessment process to provide diagnostic clarity and personalized recommendations.
Prior to private practice, she was a staff psychologist for many years at Kaiser Permanente in both Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. She has extensive experience working across different levels of care (inpatient, PHP, outpatient) as well as in community mental health.
When not in the office, she spends her time exploring meditation, getting outside whenever possible, spending time with her friends and family.
